Reporting to the Associate General Patent Counsel, the successful candidate will be based in one of the key R&D sites, either in Slough, UK or in Brussels, Belgium .

The candidate must be willing to travel between the company’s headquarter and other R&D sites if / when required.

The successful candidate will assume responsibility for all aspects of IP matters arising from development projects and technology platforms, in biologic projects.

In addition to providing IP counselling and advice to the R&D scientists , legal, business and commercial teams, the appointee will also be responsible for all IP matters relating to invention harvesting, patent drafting, prosecution and enforcement, freedom-to-operate and competitive landscape analyses, patent validity, infringement matters, IP risk management, opposition and appeal cases.

Along with a highly qualified legal team, the appointed person will also handle IP related aspects of contractual agreements with external partners, universities and other research institutions and lead IP due diligence projects, i.

e., M&A and assets / technology licensing; depending on level and experience, and on the development ambitions of the candidate there will be the opportunity to provide support for IP policy work and litigation.

Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate the commercial acumen and professionalism required to advise a multidisciplinary team and the general business functions on patent related matters.

You will contribute by :

  • Managing independently all aspects of a given global IP portfolio, including conducting drafting and prosecution work, and providing IP advisory service to the R&D and business units;
  • Supporting, devising and implementing IP strategy on a global level for therapeutic programs including a rapidly growing gene therapy pipeline;
  • Establishing, negotiating and providing counselling on all IP aspects for a wide variety of transactional matters : joint R&D agreements, licensing agreements, business acquisitions, purchase and sales agreements, confidentiality agreements, etc.;
  • Working with other functions and project teams to handle IP activities with cross-functional ramifications such as litigation, mergers and acquisitions;
  • Participating in oppositions, oral hearings and appeals;
  • Performing freedom-to-operate, validity, and infringement analysis for programs, products and platform technologies;
  • Supporting and promoting IP awareness within UCB’s global R&D community, business teams and third-party collaborators;
  • Managing relationships with external counsel where required.

    It is also important to note that the appointed person must be a team-player and able to adapt to working within different project teams as and when required.

    The successful candidate will also have the ability to build effective relationships with R&D scientists, legal and business teams, as well as contribute to the high-performance level of the Intellectual Property department of UCB.

    It is envisaged that the appointee will be required to travel on an occasional basis, in line with the demands of the business when restrictions are lifted.

    Interested? For this position you’ll need the following education, experience and skills :

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree studies in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or an equivalent discipline;
  • Strong biologics / life sciences academic background, ideally at PhD level or equivalent;
  • Final standard or full qualification as a EPO or USPTO Patent Attorney (any other national qualification welcome);
  • Extensive, practical knowledge and IP experience in biologics essential, preferably with some experience in gene therapy;
  • Relevant experience working within an in-house IP department of a pharmaceutical or biotech company;
  • Candidates must also be able to demonstrate the following personal qualities :

  • Possess the commercial understanding and business acumen required to utilize IP as a business tool within UCB’s global operations;
  • Be an excellent communicator, possessing strong oral and written skills;
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills together with the ability to relate easily at all levels within the organization;
  • Be highly motivated and self-driven, with the ability to proactively organize a challenging workload;
  • Be flexible, adaptable and comfortable working within a multicultural, high-achieving company with exacting standards of ethics and behaviour;
  • Be accustomed to project-management within a multi-disciplinary team environment;
  • Have the ability to build effective relationships with R&D scientists, legal and business teams;
  • Be focused with an attention to detail balanced by sound common sense;
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking skills;
  • Act with integrity and portray a positive, proactive and engaging manner and attitude.
