What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence.

We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949.

We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence.

We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Your role

As a surgeon, you are part of the ICRC hospital team, performing safe surgical procedures for emergency and elective surgical interventions.

These are often for the benefit of trauma and weapon-wounded individuals. You work in an assisted or ICRC independent hospital structures, regularly in limited resources settings and challenging security environments.

You are leading the ICRC mobile surgical team deployed in certain operational contexts when required.

Main responsibilities

  • Performs and supervises emergency and elective surgical procedures, in line with the internationally / ICRC recognized standards, on evidence-
  • based practices, and ensures adequate patient post-operative follow-up

  • Responsible for the clinical management within the hospital in collaboration with the Head Nurse, including compliance with the admission criteria
  • Ensures precise, clear and timely medical documentation
  • Ensures that all required resources are available to conduct safe surgical procedures
  • In collaboration with the other members of the ICRC surgical team, provides technical advice and supports local counterparts to maintain / develop the local capacities and maintain / reach international standards
  • Regularly reviews the contingency plan and other plans of action for the hospital in collaboration with the hospital management team and (sub)-delegation
  • Coordinates the triage and management of patients in the event of mass casualties, together with the Head Nurse
  • Consults with the Health Unit in Geneva in case of exceedingly difficult cases warranting a second opinion
  • Always remains conscious of the limitations (human & material resources) and seeks advice when required
  • Education and experience required

  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
  • Board certified General / Trauma surgeon with a minimum of 2 years’ experience after certification
  • Valid license to practice in your country of residence
  • Current ATLS, ETC, JATEC or EMTS certification or refresher course, from within the last 5 years
  • Comfortable performing life-saving surgery with limited resources
  • Competence to perform caesarian sections
  • Significant experience in general surgery, particularly in traumatology, including basic treatment of fractures
  • Good organizational skills, capacity to manage and work within a multicultural team in a challenging environment
  • Able to develop and supervise local surgical staff
  • Excellent command of English
  • Desired profile and skills

  • Attended the Definitive Surgical Trauma Care (DSTC) course or the ICRC War Surgery Seminar
  • Knowledge of another language of ICRC interest : French, Arabic, Spanish or Russian is a strong asset
  • Sound knowledge of protocols and guidelines relevant to low-resource settings
  • Previous international humanitarian and / or development experience in low-income countries (NGO’s, IO or charity organization)
  • Previous experience within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement

  • In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC dœs not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
  • Our field staff members must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field
  • Our field staff members are prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents)
  • In line with our security guidelines, our staff members must hold a manual driving license
