This is an opportunity for a young scientist / researcher to join the MarineTraffic Research team and work on research projects focused on Big Data architectures and systems.
Τhe researcher will have the opportunity to work on a number of exciting, cutting edge technologies which are being developed at MarineTraffic and collaborate with our international partners, which include leading universities, research centers and companies.
The applicant will be responsible to support the program of work in developing and investigating innovative and cutting edge scientific research in the areas of Big Data, Mobility Analytics and Streaming Data Systems for the maritime domain.
As a researcher, the applicant will be asked to perform individual research as part of a team for the project, under the supervision of the project leader or Head of research.
S / he may also be involved in different Programmes of Work or Projects within MarineTraffic.
This position, under strict supervision and following given instructions, is responsible for :
Developing and building novel mobility algorithms in the maritime context;
Developing and building upon techniques which utilize AIS and other maritime data;
Producing deliverables within the project consortia. If required, support the consortia by attending meetings and briefing MarineTraffic contributions to the consortia.
Producing related reports and scientific papers
Qualified candidates will meet the following essential qualifications
BSc / MSc in computer science, informatics or similar fields.
Experience with analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence and ability to build software products
Strong skills in programming (python, scala and java) and software development.
Strong skills in programming distributed and streaming data applications (map-reduce, Hadoop, Spark, Kafka etc.)
Track record of peer reviewed scientific research publications in related fields
Experience participating in the submission and execution of scientific projects, delivering the expected and required outputs (e.
g. deliverables, software).
Most of the work at MarineTraffic is conducted in the English language, and therefore an advanced knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is essential.
Ph.D. or relevant experience in computer science, engineering, informatics or related field
Experience in working with geospatial and mobility data in the maritime domain
Demonstrated expertise in developing solutions for real-time exploitation of data (streaming data)
