Our UT Health Athens hospital is seeking an experienced Manager of Lab Services. We are looking for your experience, knowledge and patient care skills in our Laboratory.


The Manager of Lab Services performs clinical testing related to the department assigned, making sure all results are accurate and relevant to the disease process.

They act under the guidance of the Technical Manager or Laboratory Director as a technical advisor of issues related to their assigned shift / department including but not limited to : specimen receipt, testing principles, Quality Control, interpretation of results and preventative maintenance on analyzers.

The Lead Technologist works along with the Technical Manager in monitoring staff and workflow, organizing work to meet established deadlines.

They are responsible for assuring the day to day operation of their assigned shift by performing or delegating the daily / monthly maintenance of analyzers, daily review of controls, pulling the daily result log and reviewing and assuring that all pending test are completed.

The Manager of Lab Services will assist the Technical Manager in maintaining competency of technologists in their shift.

They will also work with the Technical Manager or Education Coordinator by providing or monitoring the clinical orientation for new employees and students.

The Lead Technologist will provide leadership to the other technologists and work as an effective member of the patient care team, both within the department and with other laboratory customers, striving for optimal patient care and satisfaction.

The Lead Technologist will work with the Technical Manager in the implementation of new testing methods assuring that all tests are accurate and correlate with the disease process and meet all CAP, CLIA, TJC regulations and approved UTHET-ATHENS policies.

The technologist may perform phlebotomy procedures in a backup capacity.


  • Develops, monitors and ensures that acceptable specimen collection, preservation, and transportation protocols are followed in order to provide patient results.
  • Prepares, evaluates, monitors and maintains laboratory instrumentation using CAP, CLIA, TJC regulations and approved UTHET-PITTSBURG policies, as well as manufactures’ recommendations, insuring reproducibility and accuracy of laboratory test results.
  • Performs patient testing in a timely manner, following appropriate infection control methods, ensuring reported results are accurate and clinically relevant.
  • Provides clinical orientation and supervision for new laboratory personnel. Assists in monitoring and maintaining competency on all personnel within the department.
  • Utilizes laboratory information system and fax machines to enter and communicate patient results and document necessary clinical information.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient results and conditions.

  • Works as an effective member of patient care team both inter and intra departmentally; strives for optimal care and patient satisfaction.
  • Acts as a backup phlebotomist when needed.

  • Maintains and establishes competence and orderliness within the laboratory.
  • Understands Laboratory Compliance and follows written policies. Communicates issues / information regarding compliance to Technical Manager and / or Trideo event reporting system.
  • Oversees all Proficiency and Calibration / Verification surveys. Ensuring that the results are accurate and reported within 10 days of receipt.
  • Follows up on and unacceptable results.

  • Assists in the implementation of new testing methods assuring that all tests are accurate and meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Monitors Quality Control on all analyzers on a daily basis and reports / documents all abnormal findings.
  • Assists Manager in all staffing issues, including day to day coverage, holiday and approved / unapproved absences.
  • Assists Manager in maintaining and updating the department’s SOPs.
  • Reviews patient result log daily.

    Supervises technologists, technicians, phlebotomists, lab assistants, students and new team members in training.


    Preferred but not required : Bachelor degree in medical technology or baccalaureate in related science with approved medical technology training


    Three-Five years of laboratory experience


    Nationally recognized certification credentials or equivalent (AMT, ASCP, HEW, etc.)


  • Must use written and verbal sources of communication.
  • Must use non-verbal visual sources of information
  • Must use verbal auditory sources of information
  • Must possess digital dexterity; i.e., use of computer keyboard
  • Must make judgment calls based on data provided.
  • Subject to prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing or sitting.
  • Lifts supplies / equipment requiring moderate physical effort (up to 50 lbs.)
  • Must possess ability to distinguish and identify colors.
  • Must have absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results.
  • Reasoning ability and good independent judgment.
  • Work is performed under basically normal working conditions, as in standard laboratory environment.

  • Must have the ability to work under stress, responding to critical nature of medical business.
  • Must be willing to work any shift, weekends or holidays. The laboratory is staffed 7 days a week, 24-hours a day.
  • Must work with biological, chemicals and radioactive hazards.
