UNEP's Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
This position is located in the Ecosystems Division, at the Athens Coordinating Unit for the Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP / MAP), in the Mediterranean Sea Programme (MedProgramme).
Within delegated authority, under the direct supervision of the Administrative and Fund Management Officer, the Finance and Budget Assistant will be responsible for the following duties :
assists in preliminary analyses of the extracted information and the reports generated, and highlights areas of concern for the attention of the Finance / Budget Officer(s).
ensures that all necessary corrections are incorporated in the reports; co-ordinates with other finance and budget staff on related issues during preparation of budget reports.
shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of work.
demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat OR an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters.
A minimum of five (5) years of relevant working experience in finance, budget, accounting, administrative services or related area is required.
Additionally, extensive experience in working with MS Excel and organizational enterprise management tools such as SAP, PeopleSoft, or similar systems is an added advantage.
Knowledge of United Nations administrative and financial rules & regulations and experience in budgetary analysis and project formulation in a United Nations Organization will be an added advantage.
Experience with an international organization is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
Working knowledge of French is highly desirable. Working knowledge of Greek is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
This position is funded for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
Appointment against this post is on a local basis. External candidates will be considered only when no suitable internal candidate from the duty station is identified.
The candidate is responsible for any travel expenses incurred in order to take-up the appointment. Staff members are subject to the authority of and assignment by the Secretary-General.
