Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) are modern technologies that can lead to localization accuracy in the order of one meter or below.
Bluetooth (BLE) technology is one such example of IPS that has been well studied so far and recently new features like direction finding, are explored by the industry.
Positioning technologies for navigation and tracking in outdoor environments are in most cases based on GNSS, which must also provide an accuracy of well below one meter.
In several use cases the localization error must be less than a decimeter. The 5G system and emerging releases have enablers for robust and accurate positioning to be used stand-alone or as complement to GNSS and / or BLE in a hybrid solution.
Some more demanding scenarios are being envisaged lately, specifically when there is the need to navigate and track devices in a seamless manner between and within indoor and outdoor environments.
Such seamless methods must also further enhance the localization accuracy even at cm-level, so that a robust user experience can be provided.
With seamless enablers it would be possible to introduce real time navigation and new value-added services in any environment.
