The MSD Production System (MPS) is an integrated production system for how we design, manage, and continuously improve our operations and supporting business processes enabled through the development of our people.
As part of our Manufacturing Division, the Manufacturing Systems Design & Commercialization (MSDC) MPS Team is responsible for installing MPS for all new facilities and infrastructure included within the scope of MSDC as part of the broader and growing manufacturing network.
MPS will be embedded into the foundation of each startup facility and become the basis for how we operate. Our focus will be on the design and execution of the operating systems, management systems, and mindsets, behaviors and capabilities of our people enabling us to produce critical vaccines and biologics medicines at the highest quality, for the lowest cost, and in the shortest lead time.
Under the direction of the MSDC MPS Executive Director, the MPS lead will work with selected Europe-based internal MSD startup facilities, operational leaders and site MPS resources to design, build and qualify lean systems and processes that directly supporting manufacturing.
Approximately 50% of the time will be spent on the shop floor providing direct, hands on support of activities, while 25% will be spent coaching leaders and developing MPS capabilities within the MSDC organization and the remaining 25% will be spent developing global MPS standards used for commercialization and launch activity.
Due to the nature of the work and diversity of sites, expected travel will be 50% and could peak to 75% for a short time with some international travel expected.
MPS Associate Director Description of Duties :
Sponsor and drive a safe-by-choice culture to achieve Target Zero for workplace injuries
Partner with and consult cross-functional groups, plant managers and their leadership teams to develop plans and execute lean design for all new facility operations and infrastructure
Develop and install lean management systems and processes for the shop floor through the use of visual factory and Leaders Standardized Work
Build MPS capabilities by executing people development plans and processes
Utilize various lean tools, techniques and global MPS standards to design and install critical business processes and standardized work
Provide teaching and coaching to effectively transfer Lean skills into the organization for the development of Lean Leaders
Sponsor and drive company-owned sustainability goals and actions
MPS Associate Director Responsibilities & Capabilities :
Proactively recognize and mitigate barriers to cross-functional initiatives and can act as an intermediary across divisional, geographical, and cultural boundaries
Promote a culture of continuous improvement and challenging the status quo, while driving departmental / regional strategies that align with MSD's long term strategy
Manage teams to mitigate risk, allocate resources, and drive on time completion of initiatives
Mentor others on effective communication and active listening techniques to better understand client / customer needs and expectations
Lead deep process analysis through value stream mapping to measure stagnation of inventory and information and can lead kaizen to increase capacity and improve process performance
Develop visual controls and framework to make problems visible and responds with urgency to effectively break down complex problems, lead root cause analysis, and develop effective countermeasures
Lead and coach kaizen with a team to achieve multiple target conditions to achieve an overall challenge
Lead kaizen to improve standardized work
Can design balanced work based on takt time (pace of demand), with smooth flow and leads kaizen to minimize lead time, inventory, and change-over time
Apply industry standard 8-step Problem Solving methodology to solve complex problems urgently
Able to engage sponsors and clients, lead major changes, and effectively coach senior leaders
Build trust and develop new relationships with internal and external clients to effectively collaborate and achieve successful outcomes at a regional / global level
Education Minimum Requirement :
Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management, Industrial Engineering or related field
Required Experience and Skills :
A minimum of 7 years working in a Toyota-based lean operations environment
Experience analyzing end-to-end supply chains and driving complex process improvement activities delivering real business value
Hands-on application of lean tools and techniques : standardized work, scientific problem solving, value stream mapping, mistake proofing, SMED, 5S-
Visual Factory, capacity analysis
Experience applying consultative skills : ability to influence decision making, ability to interact with all levels of the business (senior leaders to shop floor working teams), project management skills (demonstrated experience in managing large teams), solid business acumen, proven team building skills, exceptionally good listening skills, results oriented, strong analytical skills, and prior process improvement experience
Coaching, Teaching, and driving a High Performance Organization. Proven experience in coaching and teaching others to think, behave and apply lean methods and tools.
Experience enabling and leveraging diverse perspectives, talents, etc. to achieve business outcomes
Preferred Experience and Skills :
Experience in a Vaccines, Biologics or Sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
Experience with operations startup activity including greenfield or brownfield facilities
Secondary degree in supply chain or business administration
Experience leading strategy development using Hoshin Kanri
