ACS Athens is seeking to recruit a Science Lab Assistant to plan, coordinate and facilitate internal assessment labs for students for the academic year 2018-
2019. The Science Lab Assistant reports to the Academy Principal.
Provides laboratory experiences in Physics, Biology and Chemistry, while creating an environment that is conducive to student learning and involvement;
In cooperation with the Science Teachers, prepares and supervises labs in Physics, Biology and Chemistry and plans student lab schedules;
Supports and guides students in setting up their lab work;
Supports students in analyzing data and writing lab reports according to criteria;
Supports students with time management, specifically helping them meet internal and IB Deadlines;
Monitors students' understanding of the labs effectively and shares student progress with the Science teachers, IB Director and the Academy Principal;
Works with students in preparing their portfolios and keeps accurate records of all student work;
Uses innovative approaches and refines strategies, including the effective use of technology, to increase student learning, involvement, and confidence to learn;
Demonstrates appreciation for and sensitivity to the diversity among individuals and strives to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning;
Maintains and improves professional competence through attendance at professional development events;
Shares responsibility for accomplishing the goals and priorities of the IB Program and the Science Department;
Records student attendance at Lab sessions and informs school administration of students with frequent absences;
Keeps an inventory of materials in the science stock room;
Makes sure that safety standards are maintained in the stock room and labs;
Orders chemicals and expendables;
Attends to small repairs of equipment;
Helps students with IA investigations in IB classes;
Helps students with experimental science extended essays;
Helps teachers with setting up labs as well as taking them down;
Other related duties as assigned by the principal or department head.
Preferably licensed, or eligible for licensure in Science;
Degree from a Technical Education Institution (ΤΕΙ) or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics;
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, to students (ages 11-17), parents and colleagues;
Commitment to remain current in content knowledge and teaching strategies.
